Motherhood

I have recently been using my paintings as a way to explore our connections with our environments, specifically through our sense of touch. As a mother, I often find my children at the center of this narrative. My time spent viewing their play and imagination, while also physically caring for them, illuminates the tactile nature of our surroundings.

Oil paint has an inherent physicality, and by molding and carving, drawing and designing across a flat plane, I attempt to amplify the haptic. I use the boundaries of the painting surface to contain these vignettes from my head, remembered in our bodies, literally cropping or zooming into these times of hyperawareness. The scenes are not exact but are the emphasis of what remains — the texture on one’s skin, the contours of a body, the warmth of the sun — all sensations to be elevated in this flat visual plane.
